A fixed point is 90 mm from the fixed straight line. Draw the locus of a point P moving in such a way that its distance from the fixed point is twice its distance from the fixed straight line. Name the curve.

9 marks

Answer

The given problem describes the construction of a conic section where the eccentricity e is the ratio of the distance of point P from the fixed point (focus) to its distance from the fixed straight line (directrix). Given that the distance from the point is twice the distance from the line, the eccentricity is e = 2. Since e > 1, the curve is a hyperbola.

  • Draw a vertical line as the directrix (DD).
  • Draw a horizontal line (axis) perpendicular to the directrix.
  • Mark the focus (F) on the axis at a distance of 90 mm from the directrix.
  • Divide the distance between the focus and directrix into 3 equal parts (since e = 2/1, 2+1=3). The vertex (V) is located at the 2nd division from the directrix.
  • Mark points at intervals along the axis beyond the vertex. Draw vertical lines through these points.
  • With the focus as the center and radii equal to 2 times the corresponding distance from the directrix, draw arcs to intersect the vertical lines.
  • Join these points with a smooth curve to obtain the hyperbola.

Construct a diagonal scale to read up to (1/100) th of a metre and long enough to measure up to 6 m. Take representative fraction as 1:50 and mark on the scale a distance of 4.58 m.

6 marks

Answer

To construct the diagonal scale:

  • Representative Fraction (RF) = 1/50.
  • Maximum Length = 6 m.
  • Length of Scale = RF × Maximum Length = (1/50) × 6000 mm = 120 mm.
  • Draw a rectangle of 120 mm length and 50 mm height. Divide the length into 6 equal parts, each representing 1 m.
  • Divide the first division into 10 equal parts to represent decimetres (0.1 m).
  • Divide the height into 10 equal parts and draw horizontal lines. Use the diagonal method to divide the decimetres into 10 further parts to represent centimetres (0.01 m).
  • To mark 4.58 m: Take 4 units on the main scale, 5 divisions on the decimetre scale, and move up to the 8th horizontal line on the diagonal to locate the 0.08 m mark.
