Answer PaperPaper Code: 133AMMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Under what circumstances a DC shunt generator does fails to generate?

2 marks

Answer

A DC shunt generator fails to build up voltage if there is no residual magnetism in the field poles, if the field circuit resistance is greater than the critical field resistance, or if the field winding connections are reversed relative to the armature rotation.

b

Define Commutation and Commutation period.

3 marks

Answer

Commutation is the process of reversing the direction of current in an armature coil as it passes under a brush. The Commutation period is the time interval during which a coil remains short-circuited by the brush, calculated as Tc = w/v, where w is the brush width and v is the peripheral velocity of the commutator.

c

A d.c shunt motor is connected to a 3-point starter. Explain what would happen if the field circuit becomes open circuit with the motor running at no-load.
