JNTU B.Tech II ELECTRICAL MACHINES I Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
How does field distortion affect commutation?
Answer
Field distortion, caused by armature reaction, shifts the magnetic neutral axis (MNA) from the geometric neutral axis (GNA). This results in the brushes short-circuiting coils that are not undergoing commutation in a zero-flux region, leading to sparking at the brushes.
Mention the causes for failure of dc shunt generator to excite.
Answer
A DC shunt generator may fail to excite due to: 1) Absence of residual magnetism in the field poles, 2) Field circuit resistance being higher than the critical field resistance, or 3) Incorrect direction of rotation or field connection leading to de-magnetization.
