Answer PaperPaper Code: 113BYMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

(25 Marks)

1a

Define potential gradient.

2 marks

Answer

The potential gradient is defined as the maximum rate of change of electric potential with respect to distance at a given point in an electric field. It is a vector quantity directed from the point of lower potential to the point of higher potential, and its magnitude is equal to the electric field intensity.

E = -∇V

In this expression, E represents the electric field intensity and V represents the scalar electric potential.

1b

What are the limitations of Gauss’s law?

3 marks

Answer

Gauss's law is a powerful tool in electromagnetics, but it has specific limitations regarding its practical application and scope:

  • Symmetry Requirement: The law is only useful for calculating electric fields when the charge distribution exhibits high degrees of symmetry (such as spherical, cylindrical, or planar symmetry). In cases without such symmetry, the surface integral cannot be easily simplified to isolate the electric field vector.
  • Macroscopic Nature: Gauss's law describes the relationship between the total electric flux and the net enclosed charge. It does not provide information about the individual contributions of specific charges or the local behavior of the field at a microscopic level if the charge distribution is highly irregular.
  • Static vs. Time-Varying Fields: While the integral form of Gauss's law holds true for time-varying fields, it does not account for the effects of magnetic induction. It only relates the electric field to the charge density, ignoring the contribution of changing magnetic fields to the total electric field as described by the full set of Maxwell's equations.
