Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

PART - A

1.a

What is mean by distortion in amplifiers?

2 marks

Answer

Distortion in an amplifier refers to any unwanted change in the waveform of the output signal compared to the input signal. It occurs when the amplifier fails to provide a perfectly linear reproduction of the input, resulting in the output signal containing frequencies or amplitudes not present in the original signal.

1.b

List the general characteristics of Negative feedback amplifier.

3 marks

Answer

Negative feedback amplifiers exhibit several key characteristics that improve circuit performance:

  • Gain Stability: The overall gain becomes less sensitive to variations in component parameters, such as transistor transconductance or temperature changes, as it depends primarily on the feedback network.
  • Bandwidth Extension: The bandwidth of the amplifier is increased by a factor equal to the amount of feedback, allowing for a wider range of operating frequencies.
  • Noise and Distortion Reduction: Non-linear distortion and noise generated within the amplifier are significantly reduced, resulting in improved signal fidelity.
  • Impedance Modification: Depending on the feedback topology, input and output impedances can be increased or decreased to better match source and load requirements.
