Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define Pitch factor of a Synchronous Machine.

2 marks

Answer

The Pitch factor (or coil span factor), denoted by kp, is defined as the ratio of the resultant EMF of a short-pitched coil to the EMF that would be obtained if the coil were full-pitched.

b

What are the differences between round rotor and salient pole rotor synchronous machines?

3 marks

Answer

Round rotor machines have a cylindrical rotor with a uniform air gap, designed for high-speed operation (typically steam turbines). Salient pole machines have projecting poles with a non-uniform air gap, designed for low-speed operation (typically hydro-turbines) and possess higher mechanical strength constraints.
