Main
Briefly list out the differences between TTL, ECL and CMOS logic family.
Answer
The comparison between TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic), ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic), and CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) logic families is based on their internal architecture, switching speeds, power consumption, and noise margins.
| Feature | TTL | ECL | CMOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Gate | NAND | OR/NOR | NAND/NOR |
| Propagation Delay | Moderate (approx. 10ns) | Very Low (approx. 1ns) | Moderate to High |
| Power Dissipation | Moderate | Very High | Very Low (at low frequency) |
| Noise Margin | Moderate (approx. 0.4V) | Low (approx. 0.2V) | High (approx. 30-45% of Vdd) |
| Fan-out | Approx. 10 | Approx. 25 | Very High |
| Input Impedance | Low | Moderate | Extremely High |
Key differences include:
- TTL: Uses bipolar junction transistors and is the standard for general-purpose digital circuits. It offers a good balance of speed and power but is susceptible to noise compared to CMOS.
- ECL: Operates in the non-saturated region, preventing charge storage delays and allowing for extremely high switching speeds. However, it consumes significant power and requires complex cooling due to high heat dissipation.
- CMOS: Utilizes field-effect transistors. Its primary advantage is negligible static power consumption and high noise immunity, making it the dominant technology for VLSI and portable electronic applications.
Explain TTL driving CMOS IC interfacing with neat block diagram.
Answer
Interfacing TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) to CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) ICs is challenging due to the difference in their output voltage levels and input threshold requirements. A standard TTL output gate provides a logic HIGH level (VOH) of approximately 2.4V to 3.4V, whereas a standard CMOS input requires a minimum logic HIGH level (VIH) of 0.7 VDD (typically 3.5V for a 5V supply). Consequently, a direct connection often fails to reliably drive the CMOS input to a HIGH state.
To overcome this, a pull-up resistor is connected between the TTL output and the VDD supply line. This resistor pulls the output voltage up to the required CMOS VIH level when the TTL gate is in its HIGH-impedance or HIGH-output state.
The block diagram consists of the TTL output stage connected to the CMOS input stage with a pull-up resistor R connected to the VDD rail. When the TTL output transistor is OFF, the pull-up resistor ensures the voltage at the CMOS input rises above 3.5V. When the TTL output transistor is ON, it sinks current through the resistor, pulling the voltage down to the TTL VOL level (typically 0.4V), which is well below the CMOS VIL threshold (0.3 VDD or 1.5V). This configuration ensures reliable logic level translation between the two families.
