Discuss the importance of functions of Management in the present – day world.

8 marks

Answer

In the present-day globalized and competitive business environment, the functions of management—Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, and Controlling—are essential for organizational survival and growth. Planning provides a strategic roadmap, allowing firms to navigate market volatility and technological disruptions. Organizing ensures the efficient allocation of scarce resources and defines clear reporting lines, which is critical for agility in modern flat organizational structures. Staffing is vital for talent acquisition and retention in a knowledge-based economy where human capital is the primary competitive advantage. Directing focuses on leadership and motivation, which are necessary to align diverse, remote, or cross-functional teams toward common objectives. Finally, Controlling acts as a feedback mechanism, enabling management to monitor performance against KPIs and implement corrective actions, ensuring that the organization remains resilient and goal-oriented despite external pressures.

b

Describe Maslow’s theory of Motivation.

7 marks

Answer

Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory posits that human motivation is driven by a progression of five distinct levels of needs. An individual must satisfy lower-level needs before being motivated by higher-level needs:

  1. Physiological Needs: The basic requirements for survival, such as food, water, and shelter. In an organizational context, this corresponds to fair wages and comfortable working conditions.
  2. Safety Needs: The desire for security, stability, and protection from physical or emotional harm. This is addressed through job security, health insurance, and safe work environments.
  3. Social (Belongingness) Needs: The human need for interaction, friendship, and acceptance. Organizations fulfill this through team-building, collaborative projects, and a positive corporate culture.
  4. Esteem Needs: The desire for self-respect, status, recognition, and achievement. This is met through promotions, awards, and professional titles.
  5. Self-Actualization Needs: The highest level, representing the drive to reach one's full potential and engage in creative or challenging work. This is addressed by providing opportunities for innovation, autonomy, and personal growth.

The theory suggests that once a need is satisfied, it ceases to be a primary motivator, shifting the individual's focus to the next level in the hierarchy.
