Show that the inductance per unit length of an overhead line due to internal flux linkages is constant and is independent of size of conductor.

7 marks

Answer

Consider a long, straight, cylindrical conductor of radius r carrying a current I. To find the internal inductance, we calculate the flux linkages per unit length due to the internal magnetic field.

At a distance x from the center of the conductor (where x ≤ r), the current enclosed Ix is given by:

Ix = I × (x2 / r2)

Using Ampere's Law, the magnetic field intensity Hx at distance x is:

Hx = Ix / (2πx) = (I × x) / (2πr2)

The flux density Bx is μHx. For non-magnetic conductors, μ = μ0. The flux dφ through a cylindrical shell of thickness dx and unit length is:

dφ = Bx × dx = (μ0 × I × x / (2πr2)) dx

The fraction of the total current linked by this flux is (x2/r2). Thus, the differential flux linkage dλint is:

dλint = (x2/r2) × dφ = (μ0 × I / (2πr4)) × x3 dx

Integrating from 0 to r:

λint = (μ0 × I / (2πr4)) ∫0r x3 dx = (μ0 × I) / (8π)

The internal inductance Lint is λint / I:

Lint = μ0 / (8π) = 0.5 × 10-7 H/m

Since μ0 is a constant, Lint is independent of the conductor radius r.

Determine the inductance of a 1-phase transmission line having the following figure arrangement of conductors. One circuit consists of three wires of 2 mm dia each and the other circuit two wires of 4 mm dia each.

8 marks

Answer

To determine the inductance of a composite conductor transmission line, we use the concept of Geometric Mean Distance (GMD) and Geometric Mean Radius (GMR).

  • Circuit 1 (3 wires, r1 = 1 mm = 0.001 m): The GMR (Ds1) is calculated as the cube root of the product of self-GMRs and mutual distances. Assuming the wires are arranged in a specific geometry (e.g., equilateral triangle of side d), Ds1 = (r' × d × d)1/3 where r' = 0.7788 × r1.
  • Circuit 2 (2 wires, r2 = 2 mm = 0.002 m): The GMR (Ds2) is (r'' × d2)1/2 where r'' = 0.7788 × r2.
  • Inductance Formula: The inductance per phase is given by:
L = 2 × 10-7 × ln(GMD / GMReq) H/m

Where GMD is the distance between the centers of the two circuits, and GMReq is the equivalent GMR of the bundled arrangement. Without specific coordinate geometry for the wire placement, the calculation follows the standard method of calculating the Self-GMD for each group and the Mutual-GMD between groups, then applying the formula for multi-conductor systems.
