Answer all questions in Part A. Answer any one question from each unit in Part B.

Part A

1a

What are the conductor materials used for transmission lines?

2 marks

Answer

The most commonly used conductor material for overhead transmission lines is Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR), which combines the high conductivity of aluminum with the high tensile strength of a steel core. Other materials include Hard-drawn copper, which offers excellent conductivity and mechanical strength but is more expensive and heavier, and All Aluminum Alloy Conductor (AAAC), which provides a better strength-to-weight ratio than pure aluminum.

1b

What are bundled conductors and mention its advantages?

3 marks

Answer

Bundled conductors consist of two or more stranded conductors connected together at regular intervals by spacers. They are commonly used in high-voltage transmission lines (typically 220 kV and above) to reduce the overall inductance and increase the capacitance of the line.

The primary advantages of using bundled conductors are:

  • Reduced Corona Loss: By increasing the effective radius of the conductor, the surface voltage gradient is reduced, which significantly decreases corona discharge and associated power loss.
  • Reduced Radio Interference: Lowering the surface voltage gradient minimizes the ionization of the surrounding air, thereby reducing electromagnetic interference with communication lines.
  • Increased Power Transmission Capacity: The reduced inductance and increased capacitance lower the surge impedance of the line, which allows for higher power transfer capability and improved stability limits.
