Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define GMD.

2 marks

Answer

GMD (Geometric Mean Distance) is the equivalent distance between two groups of conductors, calculated as the geometric mean of all possible distances between the individual conductors of the two groups.

b

What are bundled conductors? Explain.

3 marks

Answer

Bundled conductors consist of two or more stranded conductors per phase, bundled together at regular intervals using spacers. They are used in EHV (Extra High Voltage) transmission lines to reduce the line inductance and increase the capacitance, thereby effectively reducing the surge impedance and corona loss.

c

How transmission lines are classified?
