B.Tech | III | I | R13 | November/December - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 115AGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is the need for transposition of transmission lines?

2 marks

Answer

Transposition is the process of interchanging the positions of conductors at regular intervals along the transmission line. It is necessary to balance the line parameters (inductance and capacitance) across all three phases, thereby ensuring equal voltage drops and preventing induced voltages in nearby communication lines.

b

Give brief about GMR and GMD and their significance.

3 marks

Answer

GMR (Geometric Mean Radius) is the effective radius of a conductor considering internal flux linkages; it is used to calculate the inductance of a conductor. GMD (Geometric Mean Distance) is the equivalent spacing between conductors of different phases. These parameters are significant as they determine the loop inductance and capacitance of transmission lines.
