Obtain the state equations of the mechanical system shown figure 1 below:

Figure 1
8 marks

Answer

For a mechanical system with mass M, spring constant K, and damping coefficient B, the motion is governed by Newton's Second Law. Let x be the displacement and v = dx/dt be the velocity. The force balance equation is:

M(d²x/dt²) + B(dx/dt) + Kx = F(t)

To obtain the state equations, define state variables as x₁ = x and x₂ = dx/dt. The system of first-order differential equations is:

dx₁/dt = x₂
dx₂/dt = -(K/M)x₁ - (B/M)x₂ + (1/M)F(t)

In matrix form, the state-space representation is:

[dx₁/dt; dx₂/dt] = [[0, 1], [-K/M, -B/M]] [x₁; x₂] + [0; 1/M] F(t)
b

Obtain the state-space representation of the series R-L-C circuit excited by u(t) and the response is i(t).

7 marks

Answer

For a series R-L-C circuit with input voltage u(t) and current i(t), the loop equation is:

L(di/dt) + Ri + (1/C)∫i dt = u(t)

Define state variables as x₁ = ∫i dt (charge q) and x₂ = i. The derivative of x₁ is dx₁/dt = i = x₂. The derivative of x₂ is obtained from the loop equation:

L(dx₂/dt) + Rx₂ + (1/C)x₁ = u(t)
dx₂/dt = -(1/LC)x₁ - (R/L)x₂ + (1/L)u(t)

The state-space representation is:

[dx₁/dt; dx₂/dt] = [[0, 1], [-1/LC, -R/L]] [x₁; x₂] + [0; 1/L] u(t)

The output equation for current i(t) is:

y = [0, 1] [x₁; x₂]
