Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What is the need for load flow studies?

2 marks

Answer

Load flow studies are essential for the planning, design, and operation of power systems. They are primarily used to determine the steady-state operating conditions of a power network, including the voltage magnitude and phase angle at each bus, as well as the real and reactive power flows through transmission lines. This information is critical for identifying potential line overloads, ensuring voltage profiles remain within permissible limits, and optimizing system losses for efficient operation.

1.b

Explain the merits of N-R (Newton-Raphson) method.

3 marks

Answer

The Newton-Raphson (N-R) method is widely used for power flow analysis due to the following merits:

  • Quadratic Convergence: The method exhibits strong convergence characteristics, meaning the number of iterations required to reach a solution is independent of the system size. This makes it highly efficient for large-scale power systems.
  • Reliability: It is extremely robust and reliable, consistently converging for most practical power system conditions, including those with heavy loading or ill-conditioned networks.
  • Computational Efficiency: Although each iteration is computationally intensive due to the calculation of the Jacobian matrix, the total time required is minimized because the solution is achieved in very few iterations compared to other methods like Gauss-Seidel.
