1

Explain the various mathematical models that are considered for assessing the vehicle performance.

15 marks

Answer

Assessing vehicle performance requires mathematical modeling of the longitudinal dynamics and power flow. The primary models used are the tractive effort model, the road load model, and the power plant energy consumption model.

1. Tractive Effort Model: This model calculates the force available at the wheels to propel the vehicle. It is defined by the torque produced by the motor or engine, multiplied by the gear ratio and transmission efficiency, divided by the wheel radius:

F_t = (T_m × G × η_t) / r_w

Where T_m is motor torque, G is gear ratio, η_t is transmission efficiency, and r_w is wheel radius.

2. Road Load Model: This model accounts for the resistive forces opposing vehicle motion. The total road load force F_rl is the sum of aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, and grade resistance:

F_rl = 0.5 × ρ × A × C_d × v^2 + M × g × C_r × cos(θ) + M × g × sin(θ)

Here, ρ is air density, A is frontal area, C_d is drag coefficient, v is velocity, M is vehicle mass, C_r is rolling resistance coefficient, and θ is road gradient.

3. Vehicle Dynamics (Acceleration) Model: By applying Newton's second law, the acceleration a of the vehicle is determined by the difference between tractive effort and road load, accounting for the vehicle mass and rotational inertia factor λ:

a = (F_t - F_rl) / (M × λ)

4. Energy Consumption Model: This model relates the power required at the wheels to the electrical or fuel energy consumed by the power plant. It incorporates the efficiency maps of the motor/engine and battery/fuel tank:

P_in = P_out / η_total

These models are integrated to simulate vehicle performance metrics such as maximum speed, acceleration time (0-100 km/h), and gradeability, which are critical for evaluating the design feasibility of electric and hybrid vehicles.

a

List and explain the constituents of a conventional vehicle.

8 marks

Answer

A conventional vehicle, powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE), consists of several integrated subsystems that convert chemical energy into mechanical motion:

  • Engine: The primary power source that burns fuel (petrol or diesel) to generate reciprocating motion, which is converted into rotational torque via the crankshaft.
  • Fuel System: Stores and delivers fuel to the engine, including the fuel tank, pump, filters, and injectors or carburetor, ensuring the correct air-fuel mixture for combustion.
  • Transmission: A gearbox system that manages the power flow from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to operate efficiently across various speeds and loads by changing gear ratios.
  • Drivetrain/Driveline: Includes the propeller shaft, differential, and axles, which transmit the torque from the transmission to the driving wheels.
  • Chassis and Suspension: The structural framework that supports the vehicle components and occupants, while the suspension system absorbs road shocks to ensure stability and comfort.
  • Electrical System: Comprises the battery, alternator, starter motor, and wiring harness, providing power for ignition, lighting, and auxiliary electronic controls.
  • Braking System: Uses friction (disc or drum brakes) to convert kinetic energy into heat, allowing the vehicle to decelerate or stop safely.
