B.Tech | IV | II | R16 | July - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 138BRMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What factors determine the performance of a conventional vehicle?

2 marks

Answer

The performance of a conventional vehicle is primarily determined by the engine power output, which dictates acceleration and top speed, and the vehicle mass, which influences power-to-weight ratio and inertia. Additionally, performance is governed by aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, and the transmission efficiency, which collectively determine how effectively engine power is converted into tractive effort at the wheels.

1b

Differentiate EV and HEV.

3 marks

Answer

An Electric Vehicle (EV) relies exclusively on an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery pack to provide propulsion. It has no internal combustion engine and produces zero tailpipe emissions, requiring external charging from an electrical grid.

A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and a smaller battery pack. It uses the engine and regenerative braking to charge the battery, meaning it does not need to be plugged into an external power source. The system intelligently switches between or combines both power sources to optimize fuel efficiency.
