What are the various factors that influence the voltage levels in the design and operation of the distribution system?
Answer
Voltage levels in a distribution system are influenced by several critical factors that determine the quality of supply and the efficiency of the network:
- Load Characteristics: The magnitude and nature of the load (inductive, capacitive, or resistive) directly affect voltage drops. High inductive loads cause significant voltage drops due to reactive power consumption.
- Line Impedance: The resistance and reactance of distribution lines cause a voltage drop proportional to the current flowing through them. Longer lines with smaller cross-sectional areas result in higher voltage drops.
- Power Factor: A low lagging power factor increases the current for a given real power, leading to higher voltage drops across the system impedance.
- Voltage Regulation Equipment: The use of tap-changing transformers, voltage regulators, and capacitor banks helps maintain voltage levels within permissible limits by compensating for drops or injecting reactive power.
- Distribution Topology: The configuration of the system (radial, loop, or interconnected) affects the voltage profile along the feeders. Radial systems typically experience the highest voltage drop at the end of the feeder.
- Distributed Generation (DG): The integration of DG sources can either improve or degrade voltage profiles depending on the location and the amount of active and reactive power injected into the system.
Explain different types of loads.
Answer
Loads in a distribution system are classified based on their characteristics and the nature of their consumption:
- Residential Loads: These consist of lighting, heating, and small appliances. They are characterized by a low load factor and high diversity factor, with peak demand typically occurring in the evening.
- Commercial Loads: These include lighting, air conditioning, and office equipment in shops, offices, and malls. These loads have a higher load factor than residential loads and peak during business hours.
- Industrial Loads: These are primarily motor-driven loads (induction motors) and are usually three-phase. They have a high load factor and can significantly impact the power factor of the system.
- Agricultural Loads: Primarily consisting of water pump sets, these are often seasonal and located in rural areas, leading to long, low-voltage distribution lines.
- Municipal Loads: These include street lighting, water pumping, and sewage treatment systems. These loads are generally predictable and often operate on a fixed schedule.
- Traction Loads: These are specialized loads for electric railways, characterized by high-magnitude, rapidly fluctuating power demands.
