JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV Year II Semester RELIABILITY ENGINEERING Previous Question Paper (July - 2023 - R16)
Part A is compulsory (25 Marks). In Part B, answer any one question from each unit (10 Marks each).
Part A
Demonstrate the causes and effect of hazard rate in maintainability.
Answer
- Causes: The hazard rate, or failure rate, is influenced by wear-out mechanisms, environmental stress, and design limitations. In maintainability, a high hazard rate indicates frequent failures, necessitating more frequent corrective maintenance.
- Effect: A high hazard rate reduces the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), thereby increasing the system's downtime and maintenance burden. It forces a shift from preventative to reactive maintenance strategies, increasing total life-cycle costs.
Find the probability of a 4 turning up at least once in two tosses of a fair die.
Answer
For a fair die, the probability of rolling a 4 in one toss is 1/6. The probability of not rolling a 4 is 5/6.
- Probability of no 4 in two tosses = (5/6) * (5/6) = 25/36.
- Probability of at least one 4 = 1 - 25/36 = 11/36 (approx 0.3056).
