Answer PaperPaper Code: 138FBMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

Classify electric loads based on torque. Mention their industrial applications.

2 marks

Answer

Electric loads are classified based on their torque-speed characteristics into the following categories:

  1. Constant Torque Loads: These loads require a constant torque regardless of the operating speed. Examples include conveyors, reciprocating pumps, and printing presses.
  2. Variable Torque Loads: The torque required is proportional to the square of the speed. Examples include centrifugal pumps and fans.
  3. Constant Power Loads: The torque is inversely proportional to the speed, maintaining constant power output. Examples include winders and machine tool spindles.
  4. Torque Proportional to Speed: The torque increases linearly with speed. An example is an eddy current brake.
1.b

Distinguish between continuous, intermittent, and variable loads.

3 marks

Answer

The classification of electric loads based on their duty cycle is defined as follows:

  • Continuous load: A load that operates for a long duration at a constant or nearly constant level without any significant rest periods. The motor or equipment reaches a steady-state temperature during operation.
  • Intermittent load: A load that operates for short, definite periods followed by periods of rest. The equipment does not reach a steady-state temperature because the cooling period prevents overheating.
  • Variable load: A load that fluctuates significantly in magnitude over time. The power demand changes constantly, requiring the drive system to handle varying torque and speed requirements throughout the duty cycle.
