Main
Define Managerial skills. Elaborate the functions and levels of management.
Answer
Managerial skills are the specific abilities and competencies that managers possess to perform their duties effectively. These are generally categorized into three types: Technical skills (proficiency in specific tasks or tools), Human skills (the ability to work well with others), and Conceptual skills (the ability to analyze complex situations and think strategically).
Management functions include Planning (setting goals and strategies), Organizing (structuring work and assigning resources), Leading (motivating and directing personnel), and Controlling (monitoring performance against standards).
Management levels are structured hierarchically:
- Top-level management: Responsible for overall organizational direction and long-term strategy.
- Middle-level management: Responsible for implementing policies and coordinating activities between top and lower levels.
- Lower-level (Supervisory) management: Responsible for daily operations and direct supervision of non-managerial staff.
Explain the principle of scientific management.
Answer
Scientific management, pioneered by Frederick Winslow Taylor, emphasizes the application of scientific methods to determine the most efficient way to perform a task. The core principles include:
- Science, not Rule of Thumb: Replacing traditional, haphazard work methods with scientifically studied and standardized procedures.
- Scientific Selection and Training: Matching workers to jobs based on their physical and mental capabilities and providing systematic training to improve their efficiency.
- Cooperation between Management and Workers: Ensuring that work is performed in accordance with scientific principles through collaboration rather than conflict.
- Equal Division of Responsibility: Management takes on the responsibility for planning, organizing, and setting standards, while workers focus on the execution of tasks.
- Standardization: Establishing standard tools, equipment, and working conditions to ensure consistency and productivity.
The ultimate goal of these principles is to maximize output while minimizing effort and waste, benefiting both the employer through higher profits and the employee through higher wages.
