a

Draw and discuss typical minimum mode of 8086 system.

7 marks

Answer

In the minimum mode of the 8086 microprocessor, the MN/MX# pin is connected to +5V (logic high). In this configuration, the processor itself generates all control signals required for memory and I/O operations. The system consists of the 8086 CPU, address latches (typically 74LS373), data transceivers (74LS245), and the 8284 clock generator.

Key features include:

  • The CPU directly provides control signals such as ALE (Address Latch Enable), DEN# (Data Enable), and DT/R# (Data Transmit/Receive).
  • The M/IO# signal distinguishes between memory and I/O access.
  • The HOLD and HLDA pins are used for DMA requests, allowing external devices to take control of the system bus.
  • The system is ideal for small-scale applications where a single processor handles all bus control tasks without the need for an external bus controller like the 8288.
b

What is queue? How queue is implemented in 8086?

4 marks

Answer

A queue is a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) storage structure used in the 8086 to implement pipelining. It allows the processor to fetch instructions from memory while simultaneously executing the current instruction, thereby increasing throughput.

In the 8086, the queue is implemented as a 6-byte instruction prefetch queue within the Bus Interface Unit (BIU). When the Execution Unit (EU) is busy executing an instruction, the BIU uses the system bus to fetch subsequent instruction bytes from memory and stores them in this queue. When the EU completes its current task, it reads the next instruction directly from the queue rather than waiting for a memory access cycle, significantly reducing idle time.
