Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

PART- A

125 marks
a

A box contains nine cards numbered through 1 to 9, and B contains five cards numbered through 1 to 5. If a box is chosen at random, and a card is drawn which is even numbered, what is the probability for the card to be from box A.

2 marks

Answer

Let A and B be the events of choosing box A and box B respectively. P(A) = P(B) = 0.5. Let E be the event of drawing an even-numbered card. In box A (1-9), there are 4 even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8), so P(E|A) = 4/9. In box B (1-5), there are 2 even numbers (2, 4), so P(E|B) = 2/5. By Bayes' theorem, P(A|E) = [P(E|A)P(A)] / [P(E|A)P(A) + P(E|B)P(B)] = (4/9 * 0.5) / (4/9 * 0.5 + 2/5 * 0.5) = (4/9) / (4/9 + 2/5) = (4/9) / (38/45) = 20/38 = 10/19.

b

Let a die be weighted such that the probability of getting numbers from 2 to 6 is that number of times of probability of getting a 1. When the die is thrown, what is the probability of getting an even or prime number.

3 marks

Answer

Let P(1) = p. Then P(2)=2p, P(3)=3p, P(4)=4p, P(5)=5p, P(6)=6p. Since the sum of probabilities is 1, p(1+2+3+4+5+6) = 21p = 1, so p = 1/21. The even numbers are {2, 4, 6} and prime numbers are {2, 3, 5}. The union {2, 3, 4, 5, 6} has probability P(2)+P(3)+P(4)+P(5)+P(6) = (2+3+4+5+6)p = 20p = 20/21.
