What is a bus? Draw the figure to show how functional units are interconnected using a bus and explain.

15 marks

Answer

A bus is a shared communication system consisting of a set of common lines (wires) that allows multiple functional units within a computer—such as the CPU, memory, and I/O devices—to exchange data, addresses, and control signals. It acts as a single communication path where only one device can transmit data at a time, while multiple devices can receive it.

The interconnection is typically represented as follows:

[CPU] <---> [Bus] <---> [Memory] <---> [I/O Interface]

In this architecture, the bus is divided into three functional groups:

  • Data Bus: Carries the actual information being transferred between units. Its width determines the word size of the processor.
  • Address Bus: Carries the memory address or I/O port identifier to specify the source or destination of the data.
  • Control Bus: Carries command and timing signals (e.g., Read, Write, Interrupt) to coordinate the activities of the connected units.

Because the bus is a shared medium, it requires bus arbitration logic to manage access and prevent signal contention when multiple units attempt to communicate simultaneously. This structure simplifies the design by reducing the number of physical connections required compared to point-to-point wiring, although it introduces a potential bottleneck as only one transfer can occur at any given clock cycle.

a

Explain about the performance evaluation of computers.

8 marks

Answer

Computer performance is evaluated by measuring how efficiently a system executes instructions. The primary metrics include:

  • Response Time (Latency): The total time taken to complete a specific task, including disk accesses, memory accesses, and I/O activities.
  • Throughput (Bandwidth): The total amount of work done by the system in a given unit of time.
  • CPU Time: The actual time the CPU spends computing for a task, excluding time spent waiting for I/O or running other programs.

The CPU Performance Equation defines performance as:

CPU Time = Instruction Count × CPI × Clock Cycle Time

Where Instruction Count is the number of instructions in a program, CPI (Cycles Per Instruction) is the average number of clock cycles required for each instruction, and Clock Cycle Time is the inverse of the clock rate. Performance is improved by reducing any of these three factors through better compiler optimization, architectural improvements (like pipelining), or faster hardware technology.
