Explain the functions and organization of address bus, data bus and control bus in a digital computer system.

8 marks

Answer

The system bus is the primary communication pathway in a computer, consisting of three distinct functional groups:

  • Address Bus: This is a unidirectional bus used by the CPU to specify the physical address of the memory location or I/O port to be accessed. The width of the address bus determines the maximum addressable memory capacity of the system (e.g., n bits allow addressing 2n locations).
  • Data Bus: This is a bidirectional bus that carries the actual data or instructions between the CPU, memory, and I/O devices. Its width, typically matching the word size of the processor, determines the amount of data that can be transferred in a single clock cycle.
  • Control Bus: This set of lines manages the coordination and synchronization of all system activities. It carries control signals such as Read/Write commands, interrupt requests, bus requests, and clock signals to ensure that data and address transfers occur correctly without conflict.

Represent the decimal number 46.5 as a floating-point number with 16-bit mantissa and 8 bits exponent.

7 marks

Answer

To represent 46.5 in floating-point format:

  1. Binary Conversion: 46 in binary is 101110. 0.5 in binary is 0.1. Thus, 46.5 = 101110.1.
  2. Normalization: Shift the binary point to the left to get 0.1011101 × 26. The mantissa is 1011101 and the exponent is 6.
  3. Mantissa (16-bit): Pad the mantissa with zeros to reach 16 bits: 1011101000000000.
  4. Exponent (8-bit): 6 in binary is 00000110.

Final representation: Mantissa

1011101000000000
Exponent
00000110
