a

If probability density function f(x) = Kx^3, 0 ≤ x ≤ 3; 0 elsewhere. Find the value of K.

2 marks

Answer

For a probability density function, the integral over its range must equal 1. Thus, the integral from 0 to 3 of Kx3 dx = 1.

K [x4 / 4] from 0 to 3 = 1

K(81/4) = 1, which gives K = 4/81.

b

If X is a continuous random variable whose probability density function is given by f(x) = x, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1; 2-x, 1 ≤ x ≤ 2; 0 elsewhere. Find the moment generating function.

3 marks

Answer

The moment generating function MX(t) is defined as E[etX].

MX(t) = ∫01 etx x dx + ∫12 etx (2-x) dx

Evaluating these integrals using integration by parts:

MX(t) = (et(t-1)+1)/t2 + (et(2-et))/t2 = (e2t - 2et + 1)/t2 = ((et - 1)/t)2
