Answer PaperPaper Code: 113ANMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Suppose X has the following probability mass function p(0) = 0.2, p(1) = 0.5, p(2) = 0.3. Calculate

E(X2)
.

2 marks

Answer

The expected value E(X2) is calculated as the sum of x2 multiplied by their respective probabilities: E(X2) = (02 * 0.2) + (12 * 0.5) + (22 * 0.3) = 0 + 0.5 + 1.2 = 1.7.

b

Calculate Var(X) when X represents the outcome when we roll a fair die.

3 marks

Answer

For a fair die, X takes values {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} each with probability 1/6. The mean E(X) = (1+2+3+4+5+6)/6 = 3.5. The expected value E(X2) = (12+22+32+42+52+62)/6 = 91/6 ≈ 15.167. Thus, Var(X) = E(X2) - [E(X)]2 = 15.167 - (3.5)2 = 15.167 - 12.25 = 2.917.

c

If X and Y have joint p.d.f f(x, y) = x + y, 0 < x < 1, 0 < y < 1; 0, Otherwise, Check whether X and Y are independent or not.
