Draw and explain the Block diagram of a Digital Computer.
Answer
A digital computer consists of four primary functional units: the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Memory Unit, Input Unit, and Output Unit, all interconnected by a system bus. The CPU acts as the brain, containing the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) for data processing, the Control Unit (CU) for instruction sequencing, and registers for temporary storage. The Memory Unit stores programs and data, typically divided into primary storage (RAM/ROM) for fast access and secondary storage for long-term retention. The Input Unit converts external data into binary signals, while the Output Unit translates binary results into human-readable formats. These components communicate via the System Bus, which comprises the Data Bus (for data transfer), Address Bus (for memory location identification), and Control Bus (for synchronization signals).
Explain the Computer Design and Computer Architecture.
Answer
Computer Architecture refers to the conceptual structure and functional behavior of a computer system, focusing on the attributes visible to the programmer. It defines the instruction set, data types, addressing modes, and input/output mechanisms. It is essentially the logical design that determines how the hardware components interact to execute software instructions.
Computer Design, often referred to as computer organization, deals with the physical implementation of the architecture. It focuses on the hardware details, such as control signals, memory technology, interface design, and clock speeds. While architecture defines what the computer does, design defines how it is built to achieve those functions efficiently. The relationship is hierarchical: architecture provides the blueprint, and design provides the engineering realization of that blueprint using specific electronic circuits and components.
