Answer PaperPaper Code: 134BCMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

(25 Marks)

1a

Define Specific volume of a fluid and write its unit.

2 marks

Answer

Specific volume of a fluid is defined as the volume occupied by a unit mass of the fluid. It is the reciprocal of the mass density of the fluid.

v = 1 / ρ = V / m

The SI unit of specific volume is cubic meters per kilogram (m3/kg).

1b

Define gauge pressure, atmospheric pressure and vacuum pressure.

3 marks

Answer

Atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of the air column in the atmosphere at a given location, commonly taken as 101.325 kPa at sea level. Gauge pressure is the pressure measured relative to the local atmospheric pressure as a datum; it is positive when the pressure is above atmospheric and is measured using devices like pressure gauges. Vacuum pressure, or negative gauge pressure, is the pressure measured below the local atmospheric pressure, representing the difference between the atmospheric pressure and the absolute pressure.
