Prove that the scalar field

𝐹 = (𝑥^2 + 𝑥𝑦^2)𝑖 + (𝑦^2 + 𝑥^2𝑦)𝑗
is conservative and find scalar potential.

8 marks

Answer

A scalar field F = P(x, y)i + Q(x, y)j is conservative if ∂Q/∂x = ∂P/∂y. In this case, P = x² + xy² and Q = y² + x²y.

First, we find the partial derivatives:

∂P/∂y = ∂/∂y (x² + xy²) = 0 + 2xy = 2xy
∂Q/∂x = ∂/∂x (y² + x²y) = 0 + 2xy = 2xy

Since ∂Q/∂x = ∂P/∂y, the field F is conservative.

To find the scalar potential function ϕ, we know that ∇ϕ = F, which means:

∂ϕ/∂x = P = x² + xy²
∂ϕ/∂y = Q = y² + x²y

Integrating the first equation with respect to x:

ϕ(x, y) = ∫ (x² + xy²) dx = x³/3 + x²y²/2 + g(y)

Differentiating this with respect to y:

∂ϕ/∂y = 0 + x²(2y)/2 + g'(y) = x²y + g'(y)

Equating this to Q:

x²y + g'(y) = y² + x²y

This gives g'(y) = y².

Integrating g'(y) with respect to y:

g(y) = ∫ y² dy = y³/3 + C

Substituting g(y) back into the expression for ϕ(x, y):

ϕ(x, y) = x³/3 + x²y²/2 + y³/3 + C

Thus, the scalar potential function is ϕ(x, y) = x³/3 + x²y²/2 + y³/3 + C.

Find the directional derivative of

𝑥^2𝑦𝑧
at (1, 2, -1) in the direction of
𝑖 + 2𝑗 + 3𝑘
.

Answer

The directional derivative of a scalar function f(x, y, z) at a point (x₀, y₀, z₀) in the direction of a unit vector u is given by D_u f = ∇f ∙ u.

The given scalar function is f(x, y, z) = x²yz. The point is (1, 2, -1).

First, we find the gradient of f:

∇f = (∂f/∂x)i + (∂f/∂y)j + (∂f/∂z)k

Calculate the partial derivatives:

∂f/∂x = 2xyz
∂f/∂y = x²z
∂f/∂z = x²y

So, ∇f = (2xyz)i + (x²z)j + (x²y)k.

Evaluate the gradient at the point (1, 2, -1):

∇f(1, 2, -1) = (2(1)(2)(-1))i + ((1)²(-1))j + ((1)²(2))k
∇f(1, 2, -1) = -4i - j + 2k

The direction is given by the vector v = i + 2j + 3k. We need to find the unit vector in this direction:

|v| = √(1² + 2² + 3²) = √(1 + 4 + 9) = √14
u = v / |v| = (i + 2j + 3k) / √14

Now, calculate the directional derivative:

D_u f = ∇f ∙ u = (-4i - j + 2k) ∙ ((i + 2j + 3k) / √14)
D_u f = (-4(1) + (-1)(2) + 2(3)) / √14
D_u f = (-4 - 2 + 6) / √14
D_u f = 0 / √14 = 0

The directional derivative of x²yz at (1, 2, -1) in the direction of i+2j+3k is 0.
