Answer PaperPaper Code: 124DFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define Viscosity and explain Newton’s law of Viscosity.

2 marks

Answer

Viscosity is the property of a fluid that offers resistance to the movement of one layer of fluid over another adjacent layer. Newton's law of viscosity states that the shear stress on a fluid element is directly proportional to the rate of shear strain, expressed as:

τ = μ(du/dy)

where τ is shear stress, μ is the dynamic viscosity, and du/dy is the velocity gradient.

b

Derive the expression for Capillary rise or fall with neat diagram.

3 marks

Answer

Capillary rise occurs when adhesion exceeds cohesion. Balancing the vertical forces on a liquid column of height h in a tube of diameter d:

Weight of liquid = Surface tension force
ρg(π/4)d²h = σπd cos(θ)

Solving for h:

h = (4σ cos θ) / (ρgd)

where σ is surface tension, θ is the contact angle, ρ is density, and g is gravity.

c

Distinguish between surface and body forces.
