Two points M and N of a pipeline carrying water lie in the same horizontal plane. The pressure at M is 10 kPa (vaccum) and the pressure at N is 20 kPa (gauge). If both M and N are connected to a mercury differential manometer what would be the difference in the heights of mercury columns in the two limbs.

6 marks

Answer

Given: Pressure at M (PM) = -10 kPa = -10,000 N/m2 (vacuum); Pressure at N (PN) = 20 kPa = 20,000 N/m2 (gauge). The density of water (ρw) is 1000 kg/m3, and the density of mercury (ρHg) is 13,600 kg/m3.

For a horizontal pipeline, the pressure difference between points M and N is balanced by the mercury column difference (h) in the manometer:

PN - PM = h × g × (ρHg - ρw)

Substituting the values:

20,000 - (-10,000) = h × 9.81 × (13,600 - 1,000)
30,000 = h × 9.81 × 12,600
h = 30,000 / 123,606 ≈ 0.2427 m

The difference in the heights of the mercury columns is 242.7 mm.

Two vertical plates are placed with a gap of 15 mm between them and the gap is filled with glycerin (with density of 1260 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity of 1.5 kg.s/m2). An 80 cm square, 3 mm thick steel plate weighing 110 N is placed exactly midway in the glycerin-filled gap of vertical plates. If it required to pull the steel plate vertically upwards at a constant velocity of 15 cm/s, estimate the force required. (neglect the resistance at the edges of plate).

9 marks

Answer

Given: Gap width (t) = 15 mm = 0.015 m; Plate area (A) = 0.8 m × 0.8 m = 0.64 m2; Plate thickness = 3 mm; Glycerin density (ρ) = 1260 kg/m3; Dynamic viscosity (μ) = 1.5 N·s/m2; Velocity (v) = 0.15 m/s; Weight (W) = 110 N.

The plate is placed midway, so the clearance on each side is (15 mm - 3 mm) / 2 = 6 mm = 0.006 m.

The shear stress (τ) on each side of the plate is given by Newton's law of viscosity:

τ = μ × (dv / dy) = μ × (v / dy)
τ = 1.5 × (0.15 / 0.006) = 37.5 N/m2

The total viscous drag force (Fd) acting on both sides of the plate is:

Fd = 2 × (τ × A) = 2 × (37.5 × 0.64) = 48 N

The buoyancy force (Fb) acting on the plate is the weight of the displaced glycerin:

Fb = ρ × g × Volume = 1260 × 9.81 × (0.8 × 0.8 × 0.003) ≈ 23.71 N

The total force (F) required to pull the plate upwards at constant velocity is:

F = W + Fd - Fb
F = 110 + 48 - 23.71 = 134.29 N
