Answer PaperPaper Code: 115ERMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define Stoichiometric quantity of air.

2 marks

Answer

The stoichiometric quantity of air is the exact theoretical minimum amount of air required to provide sufficient oxygen for the complete combustion of a specific quantity of fuel, with no excess air remaining after the reaction.

b

Explain the concept of Mean temperature of heat addition.

3 marks

Answer

The mean temperature of heat addition is the constant temperature at which the same amount of heat could be transferred to a cycle to produce the same thermal efficiency as the actual cycle. It is defined as the ratio of the total heat added to the cycle to the total change in entropy during the heat addition process.

T_m = ∫ T dS / ∫ dS

The air entering a steam condenser with steam is estimated at 6kg per hour. The temperature at inlet to air cooler section is 30C and at the outlet 26C. The vacuum in the shell is essentially constant throughout and is 721mm of Hg, while the barometer reads 758 mm of Hg. Calculate the volume of air entering the cooling section per hour, the mass of moisture contained in the air and the mass of steam condensed per hour in the cooling section.
