Draw the schematic diagram for an ideal Rankine cycle. Draw p-v, T-s and h-s diagrams for this cycle.

8 marks

Answer

The ideal Rankine cycle consists of four processes: 1-2 is isentropic compression in a pump, 2-3 is constant pressure heat addition in a boiler, 3-4 is isentropic expansion in a turbine, and 4-1 is constant pressure heat rejection in a condenser. The schematic diagram involves a pump, boiler, turbine, and condenser connected in a loop. On the p-v diagram, the cycle is represented by a closed loop where 2-3 and 4-1 are horizontal lines. On the T-s diagram, 1-2 and 3-4 are vertical lines representing isentropic processes, while 2-3 and 4-1 are horizontal lines representing phase changes. On the h-s diagram, the expansion 3-4 and compression 1-2 are vertical lines, while the constant pressure heating and cooling processes follow the isobaric curves.

Superheated steam at a pressure of 10 bar and 400°C is supplied to a steam turbine. Adiabatic expansion takes place to release point at 0.9 bar and it exhausts into a condenser at 0.3 bar. Neglecting clearance, for a steam flow rate of 1.5 kg/s, determine the quality of steam at the end of expansion, power developed, specific steam consumption and cycle efficiency.

7 marks

Answer

Given: p1 = 10 bar, T1 = 400°C, p2 = 0.9 bar, p3 = 0.3 bar, m = 1.5 kg/s. From steam tables: h1 = 3263.9 kJ/kg, s1 = 7.465 kJ/kgK. At 0.9 bar: hf = 407.2 kJ/kg, hfg = 2281.3 kJ/kg, sf = 1.273 kJ/kgK, sfg = 6.215 kJ/kgK. Since expansion is isentropic, s1 = s2 = sf + x2*sfg. Thus, 7.465 = 1.273 + x2(6.215), giving x2 = 1.00 (dry saturated). Enthalpy at state 2 is h2 = hg = 2688.5 kJ/kg.

Power developed = m(h1 - h2) = 1.5(3263.9 - 2688.5) = 863.1 kW.

To find cycle efficiency, we consider the turbine work and heat input. Assuming pump work is negligible, q_in = h1 - hf_condenser. At 0.3 bar, hf = 289.3 kJ/kg. q_in = 3263.9 - 289.3 = 2974.6 kJ/kg. Efficiency = (h1 - h2) / (h1 - hf3) = (3263.9 - 2688.5) / 2974.6 = 0.1933 or 19.33%.

Specific steam consumption = 3600 / (h1 - h2) = 3600 / 575.4 = 6.256 kg/kWh.

2

In a reheat cycle steam enters the H.P turbine at 100 bar and 500°C. The expansion is continued to a pressure of 8.5 bar with isentropic efficiency of 80%. There is a pressure drop of 1.5 bar in the reheater and then steam enters the L.P turbine at 7 bar and 500°C in which expansion is continued to a back pressure of 0.04 bar with isentropic efficiency of 85%. Determine a) thermal efficiency b) specific steam consumption.
