With the help of a neat sketch explain the flow of manufacturing information in the State-of-the-art CAD/CAM/CNC systems.

7 marks

Answer

The flow of manufacturing information in a state-of-the-art CAD/CAM/CNC system follows an integrated digital thread starting from design conceptualization to physical production. The process begins with the CAD module, where a 3D geometric model is created. This model is exported via neutral formats (like IGES or STEP) or native interfaces to the CAM software.

In the CAM stage, the geometry is analyzed to define machining parameters, tool paths, and cutting sequences. The system then generates a Post-Processor file, which converts the generic cutter location (CL) data into a specific G-code program tailored to the target CNC machine's controller. Finally, this code is transferred to the CNC machine unit, which interprets the instructions to drive the machine axes and execute the physical manufacturing of the part.

Flow sequence: Design (CAD) → Toolpath Generation (CAM) → Post-Processing (G-code) → Machine Controller (CNC) → Physical Part.

b

Write briefly on the secondary storage devices used in CAD System along with their importance.

8 marks

Answer

Secondary storage devices are essential in CAD systems for the non-volatile retention of large geometric models, assembly files, and simulation data. Unlike primary memory (RAM), these devices provide high-capacity, long-term storage necessary for complex engineering data.

Key secondary storage devices include:

  • Solid State Drives (SSD): Currently the industry standard for CAD workstations due to high read/write speeds, which significantly reduce the time required to load large assemblies and perform rendering tasks.
  • Hard Disk Drives (HDD): Used for mass storage of archival data, legacy projects, and extensive component libraries due to their lower cost per gigabyte compared to SSDs.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) / Cloud Storage: Vital for collaborative design environments, allowing multiple engineers to access, version-control, and back up centralized CAD data securely.

The importance of these devices lies in their ability to maintain data integrity, support rapid retrieval of complex 3D models, and provide a reliable backup infrastructure to prevent the loss of critical intellectual property.
