Answer any Five Questions. All Questions Carry Equal Marks.
Main
What is the meaning of integration in mechatronics? What are the notable features of a pneumatic actuator?
Answer
Integration in mechatronics refers to the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronic control, computer science, and information technology to design and manufacture enhanced products. It involves the seamless fusion of hardware and software components, where the physical mechanical system is tightly coupled with sensors, actuators, and control algorithms to achieve intelligent behavior and optimized performance.
Notable features of a pneumatic actuator include:
- High power-to-weight ratio, making them compact and lightweight.
- Fast response times and high operating speeds.
- Inherent safety due to the use of compressed air, which is fire-safe and explosion-proof.
- Simple construction, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness.
- Ability to operate in harsh environments, including extreme temperatures and dusty conditions.
- Clean operation, as they do not leak hazardous fluids.
List the important features of smart sensors. Describe the construction and uses of different proximity switches.
Answer
Smart sensors are intelligent devices that integrate sensing elements with signal processing, logic, and communication capabilities. Their important features include:
- Self-calibration: Ability to adjust settings automatically to maintain accuracy.
- Data processing: On-board computation for filtering, linearization, and signal conversion.
- Communication: Digital interfaces for transmitting data to controllers.
- Diagnostics: Self-monitoring capabilities to detect faults or degradation.
- Decision-making: Ability to perform basic logic operations based on input thresholds.
Proximity switches detect the presence of an object without physical contact. Common types include:
- Inductive Proximity Switches: Constructed with an oscillator, a coil, and a detector circuit. They use an electromagnetic field to detect metallic objects. Used in manufacturing for counting metal parts and machine tool positioning.
- Capacitive Proximity Switches: Consist of an oscillator whose capacitance changes when an object enters the sensing field. They can detect both metallic and non-metallic materials (e.g., plastics, liquids, wood). Used for level sensing and packaging applications.
- Optical (Photoelectric) Switches: Use a light source (LED) and a receiver (photodiode). They detect objects by sensing the interruption or reflection of a light beam. Used for conveyor belt monitoring and security systems.
