Answer PaperPaper Code: 136DQMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Explain how the COP of a refrigeration system related to its energy efficiency?

2 marks

Answer

The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is the ratio of the cooling effect produced to the net work input. A higher COP indicates that the system provides more cooling for every unit of electrical energy consumed, directly reflecting higher energy efficiency and lower operating costs.

b

Explain the concept of dense air refrigeration and discuss its advantages over open air refrigeration.

3 marks

Answer

Dense air refrigeration operates with the air kept at a higher pressure than the surroundings throughout the cycle. Its primary advantage over open air systems is that the higher air density allows for a smaller mass flow rate to achieve the same cooling capacity, resulting in more compact equipment, smaller duct sizes, and higher volumetric efficiency.

In an air craft refrigeration air enters the compressor at 0.2 MPa, 40°C and is compressed to 0.5 MPa with an isentropic efficiency of 82%. The air is then cooled to 55°C at constant pressure and is then expanded in a turbine to 0.1 MPa with an isentropic efficiency of 88%, the lower temperature air absorbs the cooling load of 5TR at a constant pressure before returning to the compressor, Assuming air to be an ideal gas.
