An air refrigerator working on the principle of Bell-Coleman cycle. The air into the compressor is at 1 atm at -10°C. It is compressed to 10 atm and cooled to 40°C at the same pressure. It is then expanded to 1 atm and discharged to take cooling load. The air circulation is 1 kg/s. The isentropic efficiency of the compressor = 80%. The isentropic efficiency of the expander = 90%. Find the following:

a
Refrigeration capacity of the system

Answer

Given: P1 = 1 atm, T1 = 263 K, P2 = 10 atm, T3 = 313 K, m = 1 kg/s, ηc = 0.8, ηe = 0.9, γ = 1.4, Cp = 1.00 kJ/kgK.

Isentropic temperature after compression: T2s = T1(P2/P1)^((γ-1)/γ) = 263(10)^0.2857 = 507.2 K. Actual temperature after compression: T2 = T1 + (T2s - T1)/ηc = 263 + (507.2 - 263)/0.8 = 568.25 K.

Isentropic temperature after expansion: T4s = T3(P1/P2)^((γ-1)/γ) = 313(1/10)^0.2857 = 162.25 K. Actual temperature after expansion: T4 = T3 - ηe(T3 - T4s) = 313 - 0.9(313 - 162.25) = 177.33 K.

Refrigeration capacity (QR) = m × Cp × (T1 - T4) = 1 × 1.00 × (263 - 177.33) = 85.67 kW.

b
C.O.P of the system. Take γ = 1.4, Cp = 1.00 kJ/kg °C.
7 marks

Answer

Work done by compressor (Wc) = m × Cp × (T2 - T1) = 1 × 1.00 × (568.25 - 263) = 305.25 kW.

Work done by expander (We) = m × Cp × (T3 - T4) = 1 × 1.00 × (313 - 177.33) = 135.67 kW.

Net work input (Wnet) = Wc - We = 305.25 - 135.67 = 169.58 kW.

C.O.P = QR / Wnet = 85.67 / 169.58 = 0.505.

A refrigerating plant of 28 kW capacity has its evaporation temperature -8°C and condenser temperature of 30°C. The refrigerant, R-12 is sub-cooled 5°C before entering the expansion valve and the vapour is superheated 6°C before leaving the evaporator coil. The compression of the refrigerant in the compressor is isentropic. If there is a suction pressure drop of 0.2 bar through the valves; and discharge pressure drop through the valve of 0.1 bar, determine the C.O.P. of the plant, theoretical piston displacements/min and the heat removed in the condenser. Solve the problem with the help of P-h chart. Give also a diagrammatic sketch of this cycle on the T-s chart.
