B.Tech | III | III-II | R18 | February - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 156DCMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

What are the advantages of non-traditional metal cutting?

2 marks

Answer

Non-traditional machining allows for the processing of extremely hard, brittle, or difficult-to-machine materials that are impractical for conventional methods. It also enables the creation of complex, intricate geometries and deep, small-diameter holes with high precision and superior surface finish without inducing significant mechanical stresses or thermal damage.

b

Explain the nature of slurry used in ultrasonic machining.

3 marks

Answer

The slurry in ultrasonic machining consists of a mixture of abrasive grains (such as boron carbide, silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide) suspended in a liquid carrier, typically water or oil. This mixture acts as the cutting medium, where the abrasive particles are accelerated by the vibrating tool to impact and erode the workpiece material through micro-chipping.

c
