How do you classify aluminum alloys? Briefly explain about heat-treatable aluminum alloys.

8 marks

Answer

Aluminum alloys are primarily classified into two categories based on their response to thermal processing: wrought alloys and cast alloys. These are further subdivided into non-heat-treatable (strain-hardenable) and heat-treatable (precipitation-hardenable) alloys.

Heat-treatable aluminum alloys derive their strength from the formation of fine precipitates through a process known as precipitation hardening or age hardening. The process involves three stages:

  1. Solution Heat Treatment: Heating the alloy to a temperature where the alloying elements dissolve into a solid solution.
  2. Quenching: Rapid cooling to retain the supersaturated solid solution at room temperature.
  3. Aging: Holding the alloy at room temperature (natural aging) or elevated temperatures (artificial aging) to allow controlled precipitation of intermetallic phases, which impede dislocation movement and increase yield strength.

Common heat-treatable series include the 2xxx (Al-Cu), 6xxx (Al-Mg-Si), and 7xxx (Al-Zn-Mg) series.

b

Explain the special properties of Al-Mg grade alloys.

7 marks

Answer

Al-Mg alloys, designated as the 5xxx series, are non-heat-treatable alloys where magnesium is the primary alloying element. Their special properties include:

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: These alloys exhibit superior resistance to atmospheric and marine environments, making them ideal for shipbuilding and offshore structures.
  • Good Weldability: They possess high weld efficiency and are easily joined using standard fusion welding techniques without significant loss of mechanical properties.
  • Moderate to High Strength: Strength is achieved primarily through solid solution strengthening and strain hardening. Increasing the magnesium content significantly raises the tensile strength.
  • Good Formability: They maintain good ductility, allowing for complex shaping and deep drawing processes.
  • Low Density: Magnesium reduces the density of aluminum, providing a high strength-to-weight ratio, which is beneficial for automotive and transport applications.

Note: Alloys with magnesium content exceeding 3% may become susceptible to stress corrosion cracking if exposed to elevated temperatures over extended periods.
