a

Write about physical metallurgy of Al-Mg alloys.

7 marks

Answer

Al-Mg alloys, belonging to the 5xxx series, are non-heat-treatable alloys where magnesium is the primary alloying element. Magnesium provides significant solid-solution strengthening, increasing both the yield and tensile strength of aluminum without drastically reducing ductility. These alloys exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments, and possess good weldability.

Metallurgically, the solubility of magnesium in aluminum decreases as temperature drops, but the precipitation kinetics are slow, making them effectively non-heat-treatable. Strengthening is primarily achieved through strain hardening. A critical aspect of their physical metallurgy is the potential for stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and intergranular corrosion if the magnesium content exceeds approximately 3.5-4%. In such cases, the precipitation of the beta phase (Mg2Al3) at grain boundaries can create anodic paths, making the alloy susceptible to localized attack. Consequently, these alloys are often processed to control the distribution of these precipitates to ensure structural integrity.

b

Give the classification of Aluminum alloys and write the properties of Al alloys.

8 marks

Answer

Aluminum alloys are classified into two main categories based on their response to thermal treatment:

  1. Wrought Alloys: These are categorized by the International Alloy Designation System into series 1xxx through 8xxx based on their principal alloying elements (e.g., 2xxx-Cu, 5xxx-Mg, 6xxx-Mg+Si, 7xxx-Zn). They are further divided into non-heat-treatable (1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx) and heat-treatable (2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx) types.
  2. Cast Alloys: These are classified by the Aluminum Association system (1xx.x to 9xx.x series) based on the major alloying element, designed for specific casting processes like sand, permanent mold, or die casting.

Key properties of aluminum alloys include:

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Ideal for aerospace and automotive applications where mass reduction is critical.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Formation of a stable, self-healing aluminum oxide layer provides inherent protection.
  • Thermal and Electrical Conductivity: High conductivity makes them suitable for heat exchangers and electrical conductors.
  • Formability and Machinability: Excellent ductility allows for complex shaping via rolling, extrusion, or forging.
  • Cryogenic Performance: Unlike steels, aluminum alloys do not undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition, maintaining toughness at sub-zero temperatures.
