a

Explain the principle of minimum potential energy and principle of virtual work.

7 marks

Answer

The Principle of Minimum Potential Energy states that among all kinematically admissible displacement fields for a stable elastic system, the one that satisfies the equilibrium equations minimizes the total potential energy of the system. The total potential energy Π is defined as the sum of the internal strain energy (U) and the potential energy of external loads (V):

Π = U + V

At equilibrium, the first variation of the total potential energy is zero (δΠ = 0). This principle is fundamental in deriving the stiffness matrix for structural elements in finite element analysis.

The Principle of Virtual Work states that for a body in equilibrium, the total virtual work done by all external forces (including body forces and surface tractions) during a virtual displacement is equal to the internal virtual work done by the internal stresses. Mathematically, it is expressed as:

∫ δεᵀ σ dV = ∫ δuᵀ f dV + ∫ δuᵀ T dA

where δε represents virtual strains, σ represents stresses, δu represents virtual displacements, f represents body forces, and T represents surface tractions. This principle is more general than the minimum potential energy principle as it applies to both elastic and non-elastic materials.

b

Explain the general description of finite element method along with their significance.

8 marks

Answer

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to boundary value problems in engineering and physics. The general description involves the following systematic steps:

  1. Discretization: The continuous domain is divided into a finite number of smaller, non-overlapping sub-domains called elements, connected at nodes.
  2. Selection of Shape Functions: Displacement functions (interpolation polynomials) are chosen to represent the variation of the field variable within each element.
  3. Element Stiffness Matrix Formulation: Using energy principles or weighted residual methods, the element stiffness matrix and load vectors are derived.
  4. Assembly: Individual element matrices are assembled into a global stiffness matrix and global load vector, ensuring continuity of displacements at the nodes.
  5. Application of Boundary Conditions: Known displacement or force constraints are applied to the global system.
  6. Solution: The resulting system of linear algebraic equations is solved for nodal unknowns.
  7. Post-processing: Strains, stresses, and other derived quantities are calculated from the nodal solutions.

The significance of FEM lies in its ability to handle complex geometries, irregular boundaries, non-homogeneous materials, and various loading conditions that are otherwise difficult to solve analytically. It serves as a powerful tool for structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, and electromagnetic problems, significantly reducing the need for expensive physical prototyping.
