a
Determine the nodal displacements.
5 marks

Answer

To determine the nodal displacements, the bar is discretized into two elements. Element 1 (length L1=0.5m, area A1=500mm², modulus E1=200GPa) and Element 2 (length L2=0.5m, area A2=250mm², modulus E2=70GPa). The stiffness matrices are calculated using k = (AE/L). For element 1, k1 = (500 * 200,000) / 500 = 200,000 N/mm. For element 2, k2 = (250 * 70,000) / 500 = 35,000 N/mm. The global stiffness matrix K is assembled as:

K = [200000, -200000, 0; -200000, 235000, -35000; 0, -35000, 35000]

Applying boundary conditions at node 1 (u1=0), the reduced system is:

[235000, -35000; -35000, 35000] [u2; u3] = [200000; 0]

Solving this system yields nodal displacements u2 = 1.0526 mm and u3 = 1.0526 mm.

b
Determine the stress in each material.
5 marks

Answer

Stress in each element is calculated using the formula σ = E * (Δu / L). For element 1, the displacement difference is u2 - u1 = 1.0526 - 0 = 1.0526 mm. The stress is σ1 = 200,000 * (1.0526 / 500) = 421.04 MPa. For element 2, the displacement difference is u3 - u2 = 1.0526 - 1.0526 = 0 mm. The stress is σ2 = 70,000 * (0 / 500) = 0 MPa.
