Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad B.Tech II FUELS, FURNACES AND REFRACTORIES Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
What is fission? Explain with an example.
Answer
Fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of a heavy atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy and neutrons. A common example is the fission of Uranium-235, which splits into Barium and Krypton upon absorbing a neutron.
What is steady state heat transfer? Explain with an example.
Answer
Steady state heat transfer occurs when the temperature at any point within a system remains constant over time, meaning the rate of heat input equals the rate of heat output. An example is heat flowing through a furnace wall of constant thickness where the inner and outer surface temperatures are maintained at fixed values.
Where do the continuous furnaces used? Explain with an example.
