JNTU B.Tech II FUELS, FURNACES AND REFRACTORIES Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
What is coke oven gas? Explain its applications.
Answer
Coke oven gas is a gaseous byproduct obtained during the carbonization of coal in coke ovens. It is primarily composed of hydrogen (50-60%), methane (25-35%), and carbon monoxide. It is widely used as a fuel in steel plants for heating coke ovens, reheating furnaces, and soaking pits due to its high calorific value.
Differentiate between fissile fuels and fertile fuels with examples.
Answer
Fissile fuels are materials that can sustain a nuclear fission chain reaction upon capturing thermal neutrons (e.g., U-235, Pu-239). Fertile fuels are materials that are not fissile themselves but can be converted into fissile material through neutron capture (e.g., U-238, Th-232).
