Answer PaperPaper Code: 124AYMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

PART - A

Answer all questions. (25 Marks)

125 marks
a

Define the term Sampling and briefly explain its importance in mineral processing.

2 marks

Answer

Sampling is the process of extracting a small, representative portion of a bulk material to determine its physical or chemical characteristics. It is critical in mineral processing to ensure that the analyzed portion accurately reflects the composition of the entire ore body or process stream, which is essential for process control, quality assurance, and economic evaluation.

b

Explain Bond’s law.

3 marks

Answer

Bond’s Law states that the energy required for size reduction is proportional to the square root of the diameter of the product particles. It is expressed as:

W = 10Wi / √P - 10Wi / √F

Where W is the work input (kWh/t), Wi is the Bond Work Index, P is the product size (µm), and F is the feed size (µm).

c

Name the different sizing techniques.

Run of Mine granite is passed through a grizzly (42.5 cm) prior to crushing. The ore is to be broken down in a jaw crusher to pass through a 12.5 cm screen. The undersize is scalped before feeding to the jaw crusher. Assuming the maximum feed rate is maintained at 40 t/h and the shapes of feed and product are the same and the crusher set is 12 cm, estimate the size of jaw crusher required and the production rate.
