State and explain Kirchhoff’s laws.
Answer
Kirchhoff's laws are fundamental principles used to analyze electrical circuits.
Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL): Also known as the junction rule, it states that the algebraic sum of currents meeting at any junction in a circuit is zero. Mathematically, ΣI = 0. This is based on the law of conservation of charge, implying that the total current entering a node must equal the total current leaving it.
Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL): Also known as the loop rule, it states that the algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is zero. Mathematically, ΣV = 0. This is based on the law of conservation of energy, meaning the sum of potential rises equals the sum of potential drops across the components in the loop.
For the following circuit shown in figure, calculate the current I, current I1 and VAB.
Answer
To calculate the currents and voltage, we apply Kirchhoff's laws to the circuit. Assuming a standard series-parallel configuration where a voltage source V is connected to resistors R1 and R2 in parallel with a branch containing R3:
- Identify the total equivalent resistance of the circuit (R_eq) by combining parallel and series branches.
- Calculate the total source current I using Ohm's Law: I = V / R_eq.
- Apply the Current Divider Rule to find branch current I1: I1 = I * (R_parallel / (R_parallel + R_series)).
- Calculate the voltage VAB across terminals A and B using the product of the branch current and the resistance between those points: VAB = I_branch * R_AB.
The specific values depend on the resistor and source parameters provided in the figure; by substituting the given numerical values into these steps, the exact magnitudes for I, I1, and VAB are determined.
