Main
Describe the atmospheric air and mine air in underground coal mines.
Answer
Atmospheric air is the ambient air at the surface, while mine air is the air found within underground workings, which has been significantly altered by the mining environment. Atmospheric air consists primarily of nitrogen (approx. 79%) and oxygen (approx. 21%), with trace amounts of carbon dioxide (0.03%) and inert gases. It serves as the baseline for ventilation.
Mine air differs from atmospheric air due to the addition of various gases, dust, and changes in temperature and humidity. The composition of mine air is influenced by several factors:
- Gaseous Contaminants: Mine air contains methane (CH₄) released from coal seams, carbon dioxide (CO₂) from respiration and oxidation, and carbon monoxide (CO) or oxides of nitrogen (NOₓ) from blasting and diesel equipment.
- Oxygen Depletion: Oxygen levels decrease as the air travels through the mine due to the oxidation of coal, timber decay, and human/animal respiration.
- Dust and Particulates: Mine air is laden with coal dust and rock dust generated during cutting, drilling, and blasting, which poses health risks like pneumoconiosis.
- Psychrometric Changes: As air moves through deep underground mines, it absorbs heat from the strata, machinery, and electrical equipment, leading to increased temperatures and humidity levels, which can cause heat stress.
The primary objective of mine ventilation is to replace this contaminated mine air with fresh atmospheric air to ensure a safe working environment, maintaining oxygen levels above 19% and keeping toxic or explosive gases below their threshold limit values (TLV) and lower explosive limits (LEL).
What is Coward’s diagram? Explain it, with a suitable and neat diagram.
Answer
Coward’s diagram is a graphical representation used in mine safety to determine the flammability limits of mixtures containing methane, oxygen, and an inert gas (typically nitrogen or carbon dioxide). It defines the safe and explosive zones for gas mixtures, which is critical for preventing mine explosions during ventilation control or fire-fighting operations.
The diagram is plotted on a triangular coordinate system or a rectangular graph where the axes represent the percentages of methane, oxygen, and the inert gas. The key components of the diagram are:
- The Explosive Range: This is the area bounded by the lower and upper explosive limits of methane in air.
- The Nose of the Curve: This represents the minimum oxygen concentration below which methane cannot be ignited, regardless of the methane-to-inert gas ratio.
- The Safe Zone: The region where the mixture is either too lean (too little methane) or too rich (too much methane) or contains sufficient inert gas to suppress combustion.
In a typical rectangular Coward’s diagram:
The curve starts at the lower explosive limit of methane in air and extends to the upper explosive limit. Any point plotted within the area enclosed by the curve and the oxygen axis represents an explosive mixture. By adding inert gas to a mixture, the state point moves away from the explosive zone toward the safe zone. The diagram allows engineers to calculate the exact amount of inert gas required to render an explosive atmosphere inert, a process known as inertization.
