The profitability of a mine is determined by the balance between production costs and revenue generated from the sale of coal. Key factors include:

• Geological and Deposit Characteristics: Seam thickness, depth of cover, geological disturbances like faults or folds, and the quality of the coal (calorific value, ash content, and moisture) directly dictate extraction costs and market price.
• Operational and Technical Factors: The choice of mining method, level of mechanization, and the efficiency of equipment utilization significantly impact the cost per tonne. High maintenance costs and downtime reduce overall profitability.
