Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define virtual instrumentation.

2 marks

Answer

Virtual instrumentation is the integration of customizable software and modular hardware to create user-defined measurement systems. It allows a general-purpose computer to function as a specific instrument by using software to control data acquisition hardware, perform signal processing, and display results through a graphical user interface.

1b

Distinguish the Data logging and data acquisition.

3 marks

Answer

Data acquisition (DAQ) and data logging are both processes involving the collection of signals from sensors, but they differ primarily in their purpose, frequency, and data handling:

  • Data Acquisition (DAQ): This process involves capturing high-speed, real-time electrical signals from sensors to monitor or control a system dynamically. It typically requires high sampling rates and is used for short-term analysis or immediate feedback loops.
  • Data Logging: This process focuses on the long-term collection and storage of data over extended periods, such as hours, days, or months. Data loggers often operate at lower sampling rates and are designed for autonomous, unattended operation to track trends or environmental changes.
  • Key Distinction: While DAQ systems are optimized for high-bandwidth signal processing and analysis, data loggers are optimized for reliability, power efficiency, and large-capacity storage for historical record-keeping.
