Give a flow chart for the stages of mine planning. Explain every element in detail.

15 marks

Answer

Mine planning is a systematic process that transforms geological data into an operational mining project. The stages are as follows:

  1. Exploration and Data Collection: Involves geological mapping, core drilling, and geophysical logging to define the coal seam geometry, quality, and structural disturbances.
  2. Resource and Reserve Estimation: Calculation of the total coal in situ and the portion that is economically and technically extractable based on seam thickness, depth, and quality parameters.
  3. Feasibility Study: A comprehensive analysis evaluating the technical viability, economic profitability, and environmental impact of the proposed project.
  4. Mine Design and Layout: Determining the optimal mining method (e.g., bord and pillar or longwall), panel dimensions, pillar sizes, and ventilation requirements.
  5. Equipment Selection: Choosing machinery such as continuous miners, shearers, or shuttle cars based on production targets and geological conditions.
  6. Infrastructure Planning: Designing surface facilities, including coal handling plants, transport networks, power supply, and mine drainage systems.
  7. Financial Analysis: Evaluating capital expenditure (CAPEX), operational expenditure (OPEX), and determining the internal rate of return (IRR) and net present value (NPV).
  8. Approval and Implementation: Obtaining statutory clearances from regulatory bodies and initiating project execution.

The process is iterative, where feedback from the financial analysis or operational constraints may require re-evaluating the mine design or equipment selection to ensure project optimization.

Discuss the advantages of surface mining over underground mining?

15 marks

Answer

Surface mining offers several distinct advantages over underground mining, primarily driven by higher productivity, improved safety, and lower operational costs. The key advantages are as follows:

  1. Higher Recovery Rates: Surface mining allows for the extraction of nearly 90% to 100% of the coal seam, whereas underground mining often leaves significant coal pillars for roof support, resulting in lower recovery rates.
  2. Safety: Surface operations are conducted in open-air environments, eliminating the risks associated with underground hazards such as roof falls, gas outbursts, methane explosions, and poor ventilation.
  3. Productivity and Scale: The use of large-scale heavy earth-moving machinery (HEMM) like draglines, shovels, and dumpers allows for massive production volumes that are difficult to match in underground operations.
  4. Cost Efficiency: Due to the ability to use high-capacity equipment and the absence of complex ventilation, lighting, and roof support systems, the cost per tonne of coal produced is generally much lower in surface mining.
  5. Flexibility: Surface mines can adapt more easily to changing market demands and geological conditions, as the mining face is exposed and accessible, unlike the restricted working faces in underground mines.
  6. Simpler Infrastructure: Surface mines require less complex infrastructure compared to the extensive shafts, inclines, and underground transport networks needed for deep-seated coal seams.
  7. Reduced Labor Intensity: Higher levels of mechanization and automation in surface mining reduce the number of personnel required per unit of output, leading to better labor productivity.

While surface mining is highly efficient, it is limited by the stripping ratio, which is the amount of overburden that must be removed to reach the coal seam. Once the stripping ratio becomes economically unviable, underground mining becomes the necessary alternative for resource extraction.
